What is Hydrotherapy?

Canine hydrotherapy is a low-impact form of physical therapy performed in warm water to aid in rehabilitation and exercise. It is designed to support dogs recovering from injury, surgery, or managing chronic conditions, as well as to improve overall fitness and mobility. It’s commonly used as part of a rehabilitation or fitness program and always carried out under the guidance of a qualified Hydrotherapist.

Hydrotherapy is used to support dogs recovering from injury or surgery, to help manage chronic conditions, or to improve overall mobility and fitness. It can also be part of a conditioning program for active or working dogs, or to safely maintain muscle mass in older or less mobile pets.

The underwater treadmill is a specialised piece of equipment that allows dogs to walk or trot while partially submerged in warm water. The water level can be adjusted to control how much of the dog’s body weight is supported, and the speed of the treadmill can be tailored to each dog’s ability. This setup allows for controlled, repetitive movement that encourages proper gait patterns and helps build strength and stability in a safe, supported environment.

Why Add Hydrotherapy to Your Dog’s Wellness Routine?

Build Muscle. Reduce Anxiety. Ease Pain. Naturally.

Hydrotherapy offers so much more than just exercise in water. It provides a controlled, therapeutic environment where movement becomes easier, safer, and more effective. Here are some key reasons why it’s worth considering:

Gentle on the joints

The buoyancy of warm water supports the dog’s body weight, reducing stress on painful or healing joints. This allows movement that might otherwise be too uncomfortable on land.

Encourages natural, pain-free movement

Many dogs instinctively relax in water, allowing them to use their muscles and joints more freely. This promotes smoother, more balanced movement patterns that carry over into daily life.

Builds and maintains muscle strength

The natural resistance of water challenges muscles safely. It helps rebuild strength after surgery, illness, or injury — or simply maintain it in ageing or less active dogs.

Improves circulation and flexibility

Warm water encourages blood flow, oxygen delivery, and tissue healing, while gentle resistance enhances range of motion and joint flexibility

Supports weight management

For dogs carrying extra weight, hydrotherapy provides a safe, low-impact way to burn energy and build lean muscle without overloading joints.

Boosts confidence and emotional wellbeing

Many anxious or nervous dogs benefit emotionally from hydrotherapy. With the support of an experienced therapist, they learn to trust the process, relax, and build confidence in a positive, nurturing setting.

Complements other therapies beautifully

Hydrotherapy pairs well with remedial massage, physiotherapy, or chiropractic care. Each works on different aspects of the body’s healing and maintenance, providing a holistic approach to wellness.

Why I’m Going Mobile

Over the years, I’ve seen how many dogs simply don’t thrive in a clinic setting. Some are anxious or reactive around other dogs or people; others are recovering from surgery or injury and shouldn’t be travelling at all. For these dogs, leaving the house can be stressful, uncomfortable, or even unsafe — which can undo the very benefits we’re trying to achieve through therapy.

By going mobile, I can bring the treatment to your dog in the comfort of their own familiar environment. No car rides, no clinic noise — just calm, safe, one-on-one care where your dog feels most secure.

There also aren’t many hydrotherapy clinics available across Perth, which can make accessibility difficult for owners who need regular therapy or who live further out. A mobile service means you can still access professional, tailored treatment without the inconvenience of travel or waiting-room stress.

For many dogs, this approach leads to faster relaxation, better treatment results, and a much more positive experience overall. And for owners, it means peace of mind knowing your dog is receiving expert care right where they’re happiest — at home.

Why vets support hydrotherapy for dogs

Veterinarians often recommend hydrotherapy as part of a rehabilitation or management plan for dogs because it’s a safe, low-impact way to improve strength, mobility, and overall well-being. Some key reasons include:

  1. Reduced weight-bearing stress: Water supports the dog’s body, so joints and bones aren’t overloaded. This is especially beneficial for dogs with arthritis, hip/elbow dysplasia, or post-surgery recovery.

  2. Muscle strengthening: Dogs can move more freely in water, which allows them to build or maintain muscle mass without putting strain on injured limbs.

  3. Improved range of motion: Hydrotherapy encourages joints to move through a safe range, helping prevent stiffness and improve flexibility.

  4. Pain relief and circulation: Gentle resistance in water can reduce pain and inflammation while improving circulation.

  5. Safe, controlled environment: For anxious or reactive dogs, hydrotherapy can be tailored to their comfort level, giving a positive exercise experience without risk.
